SCREEN PRINT
WE LOVE TO PRINT FOR A CAUSE!
Screen printing originated from the art of stenciling that took place in the late 1800’s. The fabric was stretched over wooden frames and a stencil was placed over the fabric. The ink was pushed through the fabric to produce a copy of the stencil in the frame on whatever was laid beneath the frame. Over time the method evolved into what we call screen printing. In the twentieth century, the process became mechanized. It quickly transitioned from handcraft to mass production, particularly in the US.
Today’s progress, using advanced fabrics and inks along with technological advancements will see the screen printing industry grow to reach 5 Billion annually by 2027.
Screen printing involves using a woven mesh screen to support an ink-blocking stencil to receive a desired image. That stencil forms open areas of mesh that transfer ink specifically designed for fabric, by pressing it through the mesh and onto the garment.
A squeegee is moved across the screen stencil, forcing ink through the mesh openings during the squeegee stroke. As the screen lifts away from the garment, the ink remains. Basically, it is this process that is used for each color of your design. One color, one screen. Each color is printed one on top of the other, until the image is fully completed. Then the inks are cured using heat to solidify them to the garment.
